1940年代、アメリカのデビスカップ優勝を支えたガードナー・ムロイが11月21日に100歳の誕生日を迎えた。『国際テニス名誉の殿堂』入りした選手として初の大台到達になる。
マイアミで育ったムロイは、1946、48、49年のデビスカップで優勝。全米オープンのダブルスでは、ビル・タルバートと組んで1942、45、46、48年と4回制覇。しかも、43歳となった1957年にはバッジ・パティーと組んでウィンブルドンのダブルスを優勝しているが、これは同大会の最年長優勝記録になっている。シニアツアーでは80歳以上の部で優勝も経験するほどで、95歳まで現役を続けた。
当日は39個のグランドスラム・タイトルを持ち、70歳になるビリー ジーン・キングらとともに記念すべき日を祝った。(C)AP
