2009年の全米オープンでベスト8に進出し、テニス界を驚かせたのがメラニー・ウダン（アメリカ）だが、現在、彼女は筋肉の酷使などにより受けたダメージに苦しんでいる。
ウダンが自身のTwitterに綴ったところによれば、横紋筋融解症のため、「オフシーズンは少しの間安静が必要」とのことで、「可能な限り早く全ての手段を」リカバリーのために尽くしているという。
月曜日の段階で彼女の代理人であるサム・デュバル氏がAP通信に対して語ったところでは、このツイートは彼女自身の手になるものとのこと。
ウダンは今年の9月に22歳になったばかり。現在のランキングは129位だ。彼女がマリア・シャラポワ（ロシア）などを倒して全米オープンのベスト8に進出したのは17歳の時だった。
肉体の酷使により、筋肉の組織中の酵素が漏れ、たんぱく質が血液中に漏れ出すことがある。横紋筋融解症は筋肉の痛みの症状の他、重傷になると腎臓に損傷が及ぶ場合もあるという。()AP
